The Death of Ivan Ilyich Essay -- Literary Analysis, Tolstoy

In his novella, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Leo Tolstoy satirizes the isolation and materialism of Russian society and suggests that its desensitized existence overlooks the true meaning of lifecompassion. Ivan had attained everything that society deemed important in life a high social position, a the right way job, and money. Why have smokers been goaded out of public places when there are efficient ways of eliminating abethand smoke? Why are these overlooked when legislation is passed making it illegal to have smoking sections in public buildings? I do not have the answers to these questions, only the politicians do. Ithaca College is not above these laughable laws. Ithaca College is trying to pass legislation that bans smoking from certain out door areas of the campus. How ridiculous is this. Smokers are not only banned from all indoor areas but now we are confined to certain outdoor areas. President Peggy Williams wants this to go finished and says it is time to make a stand. I say that all the smokers of this nation should ban together and put an end to this tyranny that makes our lives more difficult both year. We must stop them from discriminating against us. I believe that smokers should have the right to smoke anywhere out of doors and in certain areas indoors where efficient second hand smoke elimination procedures are in place. I need no backing for the outdoors claim because if smokers are not permitted to smoke outdoors than where are they allowed to smoke, only in their houses with the windows closed and the blinds drawn?

I remember one of the greatest moments of my high school career. I have played lacrosse since seventh grade and every socio-economic class Ive gotten a little better, or at least I hope I have. My third year of lacrosse was the first time I had played a high school sport so I think that I developed my skills much more than ever before.After playing lacrosse for three years I thought that I was getting fairly decent however I had never scored a goal. totally of my freshman year I took good aggressive shots and most of them were on goal. In practice I would put many of my shots behind the goalie solely it seemed like the goalies in the games were brick walls. I can remember it like it was yesterday I picked up the ball verses Chantilly at the restraining line and carried it to the compensate corner of the box. The right side is my take up side for taking shots I have a fairly strong right hand with my stick. I took my man one on one, I tried to go outside and he was there so I went on the inside of the defender. He wasnt ready and I had an undefended shot about fifteen feet out from the goal, I took it. In an instant the Chantilly goalie was on his knees with his stick in the dust. I felt like the instauration was paused. Then very slowly I saw him get up and pass the ball to his teammate who took off for our side.
