Inspiring a Shared Vision

When it comes to inspiring a shared vision, I have an easier time with envisioning the future than I do with enlisting others. I think and imagine with the utmost optimism, assuming all people can and will reach their maximum potential. I envision a utopia of independently motivated people who learn for the sake of learning and achieve for intrinsic satisfaction. This is typical pacesetting leadership. My strength in this area is due to my enthusiasm and excitement for improvement, new beginnings, and becoming the most efficient versions of us. Like Laura Esserman, however, I am not the best at enlisting others to manifest my vision into reality. Overall, my peer reviewers and I think my ability to envision the future is above average. I can see long-term ideas and how different environmental variables will affect the outcome of a project. I enjoy thinking about contingency plans and I usually have a good understanding of what I would like the end result to look like and perform like. For example, I currently work as a web designer at an apparel company in Stafford. I have been working here almost eight months. When I arrived in May to start the job, I had many fantastic ideas already that I wanted to try. However, limitations by the software and the staff forced me to re-assess my vision several times every month. I can still see what I would like the functionality of the website to be in my head, and continue to take every strenuous step forward that I can to achieve this sometimes lofty goal. The problem with my job is that an individual best undertakes creative tasks, yet everyone wants to have input on the website’s design. My weakness in inspiring a shared vision is in persuading others that my way will be the best way in the end. The main reason I pursued an MBA is because I was hoping it would add more credibility to my ideas. I frequently struggle with this as a graphic designer, as well, because everyone has a different idea of what they want the end product to look like. I already know that the client will almost always go with my original idea. I am the hired expert after all, but it takes awhile for others to catch up with what I know. I become frustrated with others’ inputs. I have entertained many of my coworkers’ ideas for the website, almost to the point where it now eclipses my original vision and I have very little task identity. Because of this, I have lost any remaining motivation I had to create an appealing design for the website. I know a week later, a coworker will tell me, â€Å"I really hate the blue. Make it red.† Because I don’t desire constant input on the design of the website, it has made it difficult to enlist others for help in functional areas of the site. I require salespeople’s help in creating showrooms of featured products, as well as marking sale options, for example. When I ask for specific products, I get vague answers from my co-workers. I need them to feel like they have a say in the website’s look, but more importantly, they need to feel accountable for their respective sections of the site. I need to take control of the creative part of the website as an individual, and take the role of a teacher in helping catch everyone up to my vision. I think everyone wants to help out, but they are too busy with their own tasks to get excited about the work I need for them to do for the website. I will do my best to harness my enthusiasm and optimism this week in flushing out the functional areas of the website, maybe working alongside nervous co-workers who don’t have the confidence to make edits to the company’s public website. Once everyone knows their roles and has a uniform strategic idea in their mind, finishing the website should be so much easier than the difficult task it has been for me.

Movie Analysis on Cashback

SM1008 Art of Moving Image Cashback Director: Sean Ellis Actors: Sean Biggerstaff (Ben Willis, an art student), Emila Fox (Sharon, a checkout girl in the supermarket), Shaun Evans (Sean, best friend of Ben), Michelle Ryan (Suzy, the ex-girlfriend of Ben) Genre: Comedy, Drama and Romance Release Date: 31 May 2007 Introduction Have you ever think about freezing the time? What will you do in the extra time if you suffer from insomnia? These are the situation that Ben Willis in. In Cashback, time is a very important element. Therefore, I will write about (1) the speed of motion in the cinematography. Also, a voice-over of Ben is appeared throughout the whole movie. I will write about (2) the narrator and (3) causality of the narrative form. Finally, I would like to write about (4) the music in some specific scenes. Storyline When Ben goes through a painful break-up with Suzy, he develops insomnia. To kill time, he starts working the late night shift at the supermarket. There he meets a co lorful cast of characters, all of whom have their own ‘art’ to deal with the boredom of eight-hour shift. Ben’s art is that imagining the time is frozen. He can appreciate the beauty of the frozen world and the eople, especially Sharon, who may hold the answer for Ben. (1) Speed of motion In Cashback, large amount of scenes change the speed of motion, including slow motion and the extreme case, time lapse. According to Bordwell and Thompson (p. 172), there are two functions of using slow motion that are being used in Cashback, (i) emphasis, becoming a way of dwelling on a moment of spectacle or high drama and (ii) actions take place in dream or fantasy or to convey enormous power. I think there is also (iii) other reason of using the slow motion in this film. (i) Emphasis, a moment of spectacle or high drama a)In the football match scene, the team of Ben is falling behind without any score. They discuss about the strategy and they have determination to score one point. The whole process of Ben controlling the football and his boss shooting the goal is in slow motion. It emphasizes the morale of the whole team. After the failure of shooting the goal, you can see the ball flying over the boss slowly and the disappointing facial expression of the boss. It gives a moment of high drama. Then, the speed of motion becomes normal. Ben’s boss is hurt by the football, which is shooting by the teammate nd brings the match to the end. (b) In the kissing scene, Ben is second time kissed by Sharon. The kiss breaks the spell. Ben can finally fall in asleep after the kiss. It is an important scene so it changes the normal speed to slow motion in order to emphasize the importance since Ben is suffered from insomnia and the pain of break up for a few months. (ii) In dream or fantasy or to convey enormous power (a) Ben and Sean go to find the stripper for the performance in the boss’s birthday party. Ben imagines that Sharon has a strip dancing for him when the stripper is praising the quality of nother stripper. The imagined strip-dancing scene is in slow motion because it is only a fantasy in Ben’s mind. (b) At the opening scene, Suzy is arguing with Ben after he suggests breaking up. The voice-over of Ben said that it is first real break up in front of him and he never thought it was going to be similar to a car crush. Although it is Ben’s suggestion, the voice-over confesses this is a great impact to Ben. Therefore, it uses slow motion. The same thing is done again in the arguing scene between Sharon and Ben. (c) After the break up, the image of Suzy always appears in Ben’s mind.He always thinks of the time being with Suzy. All these memories again appear in slow motion, as it is a great deal and the reason of Ben’s insomnia. He cannot forget these happy memories. (d) In Cashback, a lot of experiences of Ben in childhood is introduced to the audience. One of them is the first time of seeing a nude woman body(a Swedish student lived in his house), which is an impressive memory to Ben. Slow motion is used when the Swedish girl walking upstairs. Because of this experience, Ben knows the beauty of women’s body and believes it is the most eautiful thing in the world. This may be the reason why he likes to draw picture of nude women. According to Bordwell and Thompson (p. 173), time-lapse cinematography shows us some natural phenomenon or street scenes (that continue in a long period of time) in a second or a minute. Time-lapse cinematography is used a lot in Cashback. It gives a sense of time flies in a busy city from day to night. Although time is passed away so quick, in Ben’s eye, days wear on like years. Like the still of left hand corner, the surveillance camera shows that only Ben stands still in the iddle and many customers are passing by in a time-lapse cinematography. The contradiction between them shows that the feeling of Ben more obviously. (2) The narrator According to Bordwell and Thompson (p. 100), narration can use a narrator, some specific agent who purports to be telling us the story. The narrator can be a character in the story. In Cashback, Ben Willis is the narrator throughout the whole film. His narration shifts between restricted and unrestricted knowledge and varying degrees of objectivity and subjectivity. A part of Ben’s narration is talking about him and the events that he involves. It is highly subjective. When he is having the arguments with Sharon and Suzy respectively, the voice of them is muted but only Ben’s voice-over is saying the feelings of him. It shows his inner world to the audiences. In the scene of the first day working in the supermarket, Ben’s voice over is saying something that is showing his character traits, he knows and likes observing the beauty of still object. Also, there are several scenes that Ben is confessing his childhood as a narrator. These all are very persona l and subjective. It is the point of view of Ben.The narration is not only events about Ben himself, but also about the childhood and love stories of Sean, which are the events that Ben did not witness. Ben’s narration gives a wide range of information to the audiences. It becomes an important part of the narrative form in Cashback. (3) Causality In Cashback, Ben Willis is the character that mainly encounters all the cause-and-effect. Basically, all the events are from Ben’s point of view. He is a very sentimental art student. He has the unique method to deal with the extra time during the period of suffering from insomnia. He imagines the time is frozen. As he is obsessed with the beauty of women, he can draw pictures with naked women’s body in the frozen world. Because he can appreciate different women in the frozen world, he finds out Sharon is the most beautiful one among them. Her eyes, pale milky skin and delicate frame attract him. He finally falls in love with Sharon. He draws her over and over. This is a cause of an important event afterwards. He argues with Sharon because she saw his ex- girlfriend kissing him in the party. Later, he has an opportunity to achieve his dream (has his own rt exhibition) because of a joke by his colleagues. He shows all the pieces of Sharon in the exhibition and invite Sharon to see. Finally Sharon forgives him because of all these drawings. (4) Power of music in the movie Music is an important element in a movie. It can strengthen the mood or atmosphere of some particular scene. In Cashback, a soundtrack called Casta Diva is used twice. It is from an opera, Noma. It is used in both scenes of Ben arguing with Sharon and Suzy. The voice of the protagonists are muted and Casta Diva is played as a background music. The surge of this soundtrack raises the agitated mood in the argument. It is better than only showing the content of the argument because what they are arguing is not important anymore. The imp ortance is showing the similarities between two argument and feelings of Ben because Ben’s narration stated that it seems to have met before. The football match scene that I mentioned before also uses a background music to raise the mood. The music gives the intense feeling to that scene, as it is a decisive moment that determine they can break their zero record.Combining the slow motion and the music, the mood is increased to the climax, so that the audiences can experience the emotion of the character inside the football match. The introduction of a character, Barry Brickman, uses a classical music, Bolero. It is ballet music composed by Ravel. It is music with brisk rhythm and graceful melody. Barry is riding on his scooter and shuttling between the shelves in supermarket. I think it can show the character traits of Barry. He is a spry and funny person who likes riding scooter a lot. He thinks that he is a very talented stuntman. This trait is clearly shown in the other sce nes afterwards. It is also an important trait to the causality. It is because he tries to do a stunt in the boss’s birthday party. He rides on a paper box to slide down the staircase. This action let Sharon see the kissing scene between Ben and Suzy. It drives her mad and ignores Ben. Therefore, it contributes to the causality. Conclusion Cashback is a very special movie to me. I have not seen a movie using so much techniques of changing the speed of the scenes. It makes me understand the function of slow motion and time- apse much clearer. I think it can be an example to talk about the speed of motion. On the other hand, the narrator and the music contribute to the film a lot too. It helps us to understand more about the story and also provide information to us. Explain Why the American Economy Expanded so Much and so Fast Between 1890 and 1920.

Explain why the American economy expanded so much and so fast between 1890 and 1920. Between 1890 and 1920, the American economy expanded hugely at an extremely fast pace. This growth saw, by 1900, people employed in manufacturing, mining, construction and services rise from 4 million to 18 million and the USA was producing 30% of the worlds’ manufactured goods. There were many factors that caused this growth such as the development of the railways, immigration, a large supply of natural resources, the idea of the ‘American Dream’ and monopolies. One of the biggest factors of the rapid economic expansion was the development in transport and communication systems. The development of the railway provided links that allowed the creation of a national market and access to raw materials. Also, the building of the railroads was a stimulus to industrial development in itself. By 1890, the revenue from railroads was over $1,000 million; double that of the federal government, and the mileage had increased from 30,000 miles to over 190,000 between 1860 and 1900. This development of the railway was partly due to the mass immigration that came from Europe. The huge, sudden growth in population formed an unending supply if cheap, eager labour. Men were paid considerably small wages to complete tasks such as building the railways. Developments in communications such as the telegraph in 1944 and the telephone in 1876 were also very significant. This allowed large scale management to communicate effectively nationwide and meant that companies could establish operations all over the country with no communication problems. Industrial development, sales and purchases were also now much easier to deal with and wide scale marketing and advertising spread across the West. Another important factor of the economic growth is the fact that America had an almost unlimited supply of useful natural resources such as coal, iron, lead, copper and timber. These great numbers of natural materials meant that America could almost become self sufficient and needed not to rely on other countries in order to be stable. The USA was able to put high tariffs on the land to protect their goods from foreign competition and the development of he railway meant that the transport of these goods from place to place was made much easier. Furthermore, the powerful entrepreneurs, such as J. P. Morgan, the Rockefellers of New York and Carnegie also played a big part in this economy expansion. The fact that there was barely any regulations on big business meant that people could pretty much do as they pleased when it came to business a nd companies. These entrepreneurs, controlling much of the economy and the political scene, had a huge amount of control over production and marketing. The development of monopolies; with one firm controlling an entire market with absolutely no competition, and vertical immigration; with one firm controlling all stages of production, these firms were able to become very powerful and rich. This idea of money and power spread to the everyday citizens in America and became a source of inspiration. These entrepreneurs were living proof of the ‘American Dream’ and gave people more reason to believe that if they too worked hard, they would achieve success. The ‘American Dream’ was a big pull factor for immigrants. It gave the immigrants hope and belief that they could move to the USA and start a new life. In conclusion, there are many explanations and reasons as to why America’s economy expanded so much in such a small period of time. The rise of big business meant that the economy was thriving and America were almost self sufficient. However, evidently the arrival of immigrants was a huge factor as they mostly built the entire railroad system, allowing huge advances and developments to be made.

N Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 3

N - Assignment Example Like any company, a hospital with medical practitioners operating in a team, can systematically organize their approaches in relating with their patients. In the hospital where I am working, there is yet so much to do to improve the relations of clinical teams and in bridging the healthcare professional’s divide. The hospital also needs to improve its medical facilities, technologies and communication system to achieve integration of its systems. While it can be inferred that the hospital are financially capable of meeting all these needed facilities but an integrated medical services truly require transformational management that can facilitate organizational reforms and improve relations among workers. As practitioners are considered as healthcare team or clinical microsystem teams, thus, they function on their role as to meet the needs of the patient in exchange for values. As such, they work as small staff with shared goal but fundamentally meant to address a patient conce rns. They must therefore be group in a more reasonable fashion instead of grouping them rapidly or in an unplanned manner for an emergent purpose. This is however relatively experienced because in other hospitals, those team that are group rapidly consist of expert or highly trained professional doctors, although they rarely work together. These are medical professionals who are needed in critical events as contingency team. With regard to ‘silos’ status, the hospital where am working has relatively attained that level although not yet completely. True, the hospital has its own pharmacy, laboratory, rehabilitation clinic, ambulatory clinic, maternal delivery and children’s section, but not all of these operate independently from the other. Perhaps, the physicians may have independently hold its office within the hospital as resident physicians; the

Environmentally Friendly Electric Car Project Case Study

Environmentally Friendly Electric Car Project - Case Study Example Other highly topical items driving the debate include steadily rising prices for traditional fuels used to power vehicles. As the focus of the activities of University Research Group 2, the electric car, with its inherent environmental friendliness, has distinct advantages to offer to the transport market. With the family saloon sector in mind, the electric car has a number of immediate advantages: safety and convenience coming from battery- or solar-power; efficiency from the flexible power of electric motors; economy using the duality of the electric motor and electric generator (Her Electric Vehicle, 2008). In addition, with urban traffic restrictions looming and already in place in London (Edmunds, 2007), the electric car is well placed in terms of practically zero pollution and reduced noise of operation. In a society where transport habits are still centred around the car and other means such as public transport, walking and cycling take a back seat, the electric car promises much as a solution that responds to both the consumer's needs and desires. Car manufacturers themselves seem to have some difficulty in gauging the size of the market. ... Even the major players like Toyota, a leader in hybrid electric-petrol-engine vehicles admits that "we just don't yet know the size of that market" (Calcars, 2007). The main competitor for Toyota, General Motors, recently announced plans to launch its own electric saloon car, the Volt (a PHEV - plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), with a stated 60,000 vehicles for the initial launch year (Green, 2007). Closer to home here in the UK, the specialist car company Th!nk (sic) has made public their goal to produce and sell 9,000 electric cars to sell in the UK as well as Switzerland, Norway and Denmark (Winnie, 2008). Extrapolating from these numbers suggests that the UK market for electric cars for the private consumer runs to some 48,000 units per year at the moment, of which Th!nk is aiming to capture 14%. Competition Competition in this market can be categorised in three ways. Firstly, the direct competition from other companies and organisations similar to University Research Group 2: in other words, specialists in this market, typified for example by Th!nk. Secondly, by the major car manufacturers operating on a global basis who have launched mainly hybrid models but appear to be moving towards a pure BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) offering. General Motors is an example, as is Nissan and Toyota. Thirdly, there are the other competing elements including but not limited to petrol and diesel engine vehicles as well as low consumer awareness (ILEA, 2001). Macro environmental factors - PESTEL model overview In order to analyse and evaluate the development of the market, the potential for an electric car from University Research Group 2 and how this should be presented to the market, we use PESTEL (political, economic, socio-cultural, technological, legal and

Strategic Marketing Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Strategic Marketing - Case Study Example It is a democratic country which ensures that the tourism industry enjoys stability and hence the hotel industry will also get benefitted. India has a specific ministry called tourism ministry which formulates strategies to enhance the tourism sector in India. Indian government charges huge amount of taxes from the luxury hotels which will have a huge impact as political scenario changes. The hotel industry in India gets good incentives and the respective state governments also supports development of such hotels and their growth. Though the terrorist attacks on Taj Hotels and Oberoi hotel have led to drop in foreign travellers, Indian government is taking steps to allay such fears (Kachwala and Mukherjee, 2009, p. 158). Economic Factors India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world with the GDP growing almost 4 to 5 % where the rest of the world economies are slowing down. Hence many business meetings and conferences are held in India and the hotel industry tries to cap italize on that. It is seen that many foreign tourist travellers are now willing to spend money to get their value for it. As economy of India is increasing at a good pace, it signifies investments in infrastructure, construction of new avenues for tourist, increase in promotional expenditure, beautification of the cities and towns etc. These give a boost to the hotel industry. With high growth in GDP and a sound financial system, the hotel industry has grabbed the chance of enhancing their profitability (Anand, 1976, p. 43). Socio-Cultural India being a diverse nation has diverse languages, traditions, cultures, cuisines; making it an ideal destination for cultural tourism. India has more 22 languages recognized by constitution and 1600 dialects. Hence cultural tourism in India will rise and so will the growth of the hotel industry. Foreigners love this concept and are pleased with the love they get in travelling to India. This also enhances the Hotel Industry (Briggs, 2001, p. 49). Technological In today’s globalised world Information technology plays a critical role in tourism planning and implementation. There are web based platform like makemytrip.com, yatra.com in India which provides tourist booking hotels online. Most of the luxury hotels are now Wi-Fi enabled. More technology means less manpower and chance of lesser complaints. This shows enhancement of the Hotel Industry In India transportation system is not as per the international standard. For any nation to be successful in tourism industry it must be equipped with efficient transportation system which is capable of carrying large volumes of people in a cost efficient way. India is lagging behind in this front. If this improves a foreigner can easily find such luxury hotels and travel there comfortably (Kannan, 2005, p. 39). Environmental In India the environmental forces supports the Hotel Industry in India. Environmental forces like growth of GDP, Political stability in India supports the Hotel industry in India. Legal Indian Legal system is very strong and it doesn’t support any flouting of rules like keeping emergency services ready, keeping the appropriate records of the foreign visitors, paying of appropriate taxes etc. Such

The Brady Act; A policy review Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

The Brady Act; A policy review - Case Study Example The examination of this study will show where there is a specific set of implementations for the crimes as well as changes in the understanding of the act through political and social rejection of the Brady Act. To alter this, there is the need to further examine what the gaps in the act are as well as what can be done to further prevent crimes through types of weaponry. Policies and acts are defined to provide protection and safety among the nation while regulating different actions by citizens in the United States. A policy which has come into effect since 1993 is the Brady Act, which is based on regulating the hand guns that are supplied to individuals in different states. The act was developed specifically to have regulations on criminals who try to purchase hand guns by creating controls and stipulations that are a part of receiving a handgun. The Brady Act has shown several prospects that are helping to regulate the crimes from hand gun purchases; however, there are also several questions in the legitimacy of the act as well as to what extent the act can provide a complete lowering of criminal rates within different states while offering the correct types of restrictions among those who carry firearms. The concepts that are in the study are based on the Brady Act and how it has changed the regulations with firearms. The author shows that the regulations and policies have been implemented over a longer period of time; however, this has not stopped the purchases of handguns by criminals. The author shows how the policies, such as background checks, five day waiting periods and state and federal regulations haven’t been able to alter the purchase in different states. The reinforcement of the act is one which the author shows as limited, specifically which is shown through the statistics of the Brady Act and the amount

Critique of the play OEDIPUS REX Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Critique of the play OEDIPUS REX - Essay Example It is the prophecy on which, the story is based. It is linked to the topic of the paper, as it is the main prophecy. According to the prophecy told to Laius, the child who was born in Laius’s home was to kill his father at maturity and will regard this act as an accomplishment. Jocasta treated this prophecy as a lie told by the soothsayer as according to her knowledge, robbers killed her husband. This is again the prophecy that Oedipus listened before but Jocasta is not aware of the truth. This relates to the topic, as it is again a prophecy told a long time ago and matches Teiresias’s prophecy. Oedipus informs Jocasta about his wretchedness as according to a prophecy, it was in his fortune to be banished from his native land and stay away from his parents. He has to leave his beloved ones only because of a prophecy that told him that he would kill his father and marry his mother. This quotation is linked to the topic because it is again a prophecy due to which, Oedipus has to travel to another land by leaving his parents who have fostered him. It is this fear due to which, the prophecy comes out to be true. Oedipus laments on listening to the truth and speaks about his worsened state. He says that everything told to him is true and he is a cursed creature because his birth, his kingdom and his wedding, all were for his ill fate. He took birth with bad luck, killed his father and was involved in an incestuous relationship with his mother due to which, he thought that he is cursed trice. This quote is important for the story as it proves the prophecy to be true. This is related to the topic, as the prophecy mentioned earlier is proved true

Greenmail & firing employees Essay Example for Free

Greenmail firing employees Essay The term is a greenmail is formed by combining the terms greenback and blackmail, invented by journalists and commentators who saw the practices of corporate raiders as a form of blackmail. The target company is financially held hostage, and is legally forced to pay the greenmailer to go away. Greenmailing is a variation on the corporate raid or hostile takeover. The greenmailer commonly targets a publicly traded company that is cash rich but often undervalued, with large assets and possibly a solid customer base. Other targets are companies that are simply inefficient. The greenmailer isnt really interested in the business of the company. It doesnt want to own the company, improve it, or further build it up. It will, if forced to acquire the target, sell its parts off piecemeal, which can bring a greater profit than selling the whole target. This is called asset stripping and involves replacing management and firing employees. Greenmail proved lucrative for investors such as T. Boone Pickens and Sir James Goldsmith during the 1980s. In the latter example, Goldsmith made $90 million from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in the 1980s in this manner. Occidental Petroleum paid greenmail to David Murdoch in 1984. However, if a proper greenmail occurs, the greenmailer merely secures a significant stake in the target company. The greenmailer can offer to end the threat to the target company by selling its share back at a substantial premium. The target or mark can also go private with the same results: a profit to the greenmailer. The greenmailer gets away with no oversight, low overhead, and its profits. The target is left poorer and without the assets that attracted the raid in the beginning. A company which agrees to buy back the bidders stock position avoids being taken over. In return, the bidder agrees to abandon the takeover attempt and may sign a confidential agreement with the greenmailer who will agree not to resume the maneuver for a period of time. Greenmail is a corporate defense mechanism to buy back shares from shareholders attempting to control the firm. The practice has many critics but it can result to potential windfall for the company by protecting company shares from low takeovr bids and gives the firm the opportunity to restructure management. While benefiting the greenmailer, the company loses capital and other assets. This hamstrings its future growth potential. This means the shareholders lose as well in addition to impacting the supplier and customers economically linked to the company. Generally the companys existing management may remain in place but the employees usually see their ranks reduced. Courts in states such as Calfornia have favored shareholder lawsuits, based on the contention that greenmailer constituted a breach of fiduciary responsibility. Greenmail is arguably counter productive because once such a payment becomes public others may feign a takeover attempt. Greenmail is money paid by a company (or allied company or individual) to acquire its own shares of stock from a shareholder who is threatening to take control of, or unwanted influence over, the company. In the parlance of the financial community, strategies to prevent a takeover are called a Poison pill. This implies that the corporate raider will suffer if they try to swallow the target of the takeover. This involves a myriad of arcane changes in the details of corporate ownership structure, investment market rules, and may involve legal requirement in the jurisdiction where the company is incorporated. Individual states may pass protectionist laws that impose limits for launching formal bids, or obligations to seek shareholder approval for the buyback of its own shares, and in Federal tax treatment of greenmail gains have all made greenmail far less common since the early 1990s. Heckmann et al. v. Ahmanson trial in July 1989. This was one of the final cases involving the payment of greenmail. Greenmail is slang for targeted share repurchases transactions in which a company repurchases shares from specific holders, rather than on the open market. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon for companies to pay greenmail to large investors who were challenging corporate management and threatening a takeover of the firm. In this case, Disney had paid a premium price to repurchase shares accumulated by Saul Steinbergs Reliance Group. Working with attorney Michael Hennigan, I explained to the jury how this could damage Disneys other shareholders and to estimate the amount of the damage. Following my direct examination, as Arthur Liman was standing to begin his cross, the judge decided recess the trial early for the July 4th holiday. During the recess, the case settled. It was the only greenmail case in which plaintiffs received a cash settlement.

The Eiffel Tower Essay Example for Free

The Eiffel Tower Essay I have always dreamed of going to Paris, France and see Eiffel Tower one day. Travel guides have always described the Eiffel Tower as magical.   I had decided to ask Steve, my tall, skinny and long-haired best friend to join me in France and visit the Eiffel Tower. Steve had asked me if I knew how to speak French and I told him I do not. Steve had asked me to bring along a French dictionary just in case we needed to know some French words. When we arrived at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, the weather was cloudy and the temperature humid. At a distance, the Eiffel Tower can be seen. At first glance, Steve and I fell in love with it because it is the most beautiful thing that we had ever seen. We grew excited as we near the Eiffel Tower and arrived at our hotel, Hotel de la Paix. The hotel is a 20 to 25 minute walk going to Eiffel Tower. When we had reached our hotel, it had become a little rainy and it was already two o’ clock in the afternoon. There are many people walking down the streets and people going to the Eiffel Tower to visit. From our hotel room, you can see a good view of the Eiffel Tower. Since it was a little bit rainy, Steve and I decided to rest first before going.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Since that was my first time in Paris, I was not aware that the weather in Paris was very unpredictable. . Steve and I went to the Eiffel Tower at around four in the afternoon and the rain had already stopped. We strolled for a few minutes passing by beautiful buildings and houses with different kinds of architectural designs and details. Because of the beautiful surroundings around us we did not take notice of the weather. The unpredictable weather started to change and when we had reached the tower it began to rain again. Even though it was raining it was still amazing to look at the Eiffel Tower up close. At close range, I began to wonder whether I am dreaming or am I really seeing the Eiffel Tower because the structure is so huge and beautiful that I cannot take my eyes off it. At the ground floor level, souvenir shops can be seen anywhere, there are also snack bars for the hungry. The monument of Gustave Eiffel the creator of the Eiffel tower can be seen in front of the Eiffel Tower. The tower had provided us shield from the rain. Being there in person takes a lot of patience and perseverance. Steve and I waited for more than thirty minutes just to be able to enter the tower because the line was so long.   That did not stop there; we were again asked to wait for the elevator to go down so that we would be able to travel up. It took us another 30 minutes to wait for it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The first floor of the tower is like a museum of some sorts. There is a gallery of work exhibits. There were pictures of the tower and the different historic milestones the features the Eiffel Tower and its creator. Exciting scientific gadgets can also be seen in the first floor of the tower. There is a transparent circular thing which they call the Feroscope. Inside, there are interactive videos and different patterns of light shown in it. Featured in the videos are how the monument of Gustave Eiffel was made and how the tower is maintained properly. Looking at the displays makes me want to see more of the tower because of the interesting facts and stories related to it and how the French people had maintained the tower which on my opinion is really hard to do. Steve who was not interested at first on the historical part, and maintenance of the tower had become quite amazed on how the French had presented the Eiffel Tower and we were still not yet finished on our tour. A large observatory can also be seen in the floor which looks high-tech. The observatory has a video that shows how the tower was constructed. Steve and I walked around the perimeter of the first floor and there are different views of France. There are markers on the ledges and each shows the landmark of the view that can be seen below. As we walked, Steve and I decided to eat at Les Buffet De la Tour Eiffel. As I have stated earlier, both of us do not know how to speak French so when we read the menu all we can understand from it is pizza. It was quite funny because we were really looking forward to taste the specialty of France. However, since pizza is the only word we know then that is what we have ordered. It would be a waste of money if we do not like what we had guessed is delicious in the menu. After eating we decided to stop by the souvenir shop and bought some souvenirs to take home. Then we went to the second floor using the steps because we would not like to wait again for the elevator.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When we had arrived at the second floor, we found a very interesting window scene animation. The display shows the history of the construction and explains the operation of the hydraulic elevator which was used before from the year it was constructed until the year 1983. It also includes the elevators that are used now. It was really amazing for new-comers in Paris to discover how the people had discovered an elevator that uses water as a power source. There is also a see through glass in the second floor where you can take a look at the view below. A view of the first floor and the ground floor can be seen in there. Restaurants, snack bars and internet stations are available in this part. In this part of the tower, Steve and I decided to explore it more and from there a panoramic view of the buildings below can be seen and you can also go around it and see all views without a metal bar or a room blocking your view. During the time that we went here it was already sunset and the view was just spectacular. It’s like seeing another part of the world in a different place.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   After taking a look at the view, we decided to go to the top floor. We had to wait for the elevator again in order to go to the top floor of the tower. It was worth the wait because when we had reached the top floor, you can see a representation of the creator’s office and a wax representation of Gustave, his daughter and the famous Thomas Edison. We were shocked at first because we thought they were true persons and then we noticed that they were not moving. We had asked about it that is when we knew who the characters was in the room. Another part of the top floor is the Engineer’s office where there are wax characters again of Gustave and his engineers. It was really amazing. You would wonder how the creators of the wax characters had created this. In this part, you can also see a 360 view of the tower. Indicated in the screens are the great cities in the world. The direction and the distance of the cities in the database can be seen in the screens provided for tourists.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It was already dark when we got down because we had to wait again for the elevator. Steve and I really enjoyed the visit and when we got down, another view had bedazzled us. It was the Eiffel Tower at night. You can see it lit up like a Christmas tree and it is really an amazing sight. The crowd of people walking are looking up at it as they walked and one cannot blame them for doing so because Eiffel Tower has its own magic. We stood there for almost an hour just looking at it and then we decided to go back to our hotel.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Visiting Paris, France would always be etched in my memory because of the spectacular sights and presentation of the tower. Several facts are also interesting in the construction and maintenance of the tower. One would not be bored about the stories that the Eiffel tower has because these stories are unique and different. Steve and I really enjoyed going there and even if he is not inclined in visiting places like the Eiffel Tower, he had asked me to tell him if I am again going back to the  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   magical place. He is looking forward to our next visit to the tower and next time he would be able to speak French and talk to the people around us, the tour guide and even identify the menu a French restaurant is offering.

Example Answers for Questions on Dells Supply Chain

Example Answers for Questions on Dells Supply Chain Supply chain is around the core business and controls information flow, logistics and capital flow (Tarantilis, 2008). It starts from the procurement of raw materials to intermediate products and final products, and the final product will be sales by the sales network to reach consumers. It is the whole functional network chain structure links suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and consumers. It is not only a logistics chain, information chain and the capital chain connects provider and consumer, but also it is a value-added chain (Yao, 2008), and materials in the supply chain due to processing, packaging, transportation and other processes to increase their value, bringing income to the relevant enterprises. Identify and explain the components of the supply chain In general, the basic elements constitute the supply chain contains: suppliers: provide raw materials or parts and components to the manufacturer; manufacturers: that is the product manufacturing. It is the most important part of production, and it is responsible for production, development and after sales service; distribution company: agents that are set for products distribution to achieve the geographical scope; retailers: retailers sell product to consumers; logistics: specializes in providing logistics services to companies outside of the enterprise mentioned above. Wholesale, retail and logistics can also be referred to as circulation (Green Whitten, 2008). Why is managing the supply chain a very complex process? Explain the issues to be managed and the trade-offs to be made in its management. First, the supply chain is a complex, dynamic network. This network is composed by companies (or business) with different targets. This means that looking for specific supply chain management strategies for specific company will face enormous challenges (Riedel, 2009). Secondly, supply and demand often conflict in the marketing practice (Gundlach, et al. 2006). The difficulty lies in that before demand, manufacturers have to produce a certain level of production, which means that manufacturers must bear the enormous financial risk. Thirdly, supply chain systems change with time is also an important consideration. Even if the demand can be accurately forecasted (for example, long-term cooperation contract signed by both supply and demand), the planning process also need to consider the demand and cost parameters change in a period of time due to seasonal fluctuations, trends, advertising and promotions, pricing strategies of competitors and other factors. These needs and cost parameters which change over time make supply chain management strategies more difficult. In fact, the most effective supply chain management strategy is the one that can make the supply chain system to minimize operating costs and meet customer demand. Fourth, new problems in some new supply chain system are emerging and cannot be clearly explained in the life cycle of their products. For example, in high-tech industry, product life cycles are becoming shorter and shorter. On the other hand, in these industries, the rapid technological development and dazzling product innovation making the accurate prediction of demand for a particular product become more and more difficult. And ultimately lead to a number of the manufacturers price war, which not only reduces the value in their life cycle, but also shorts the product life cycle. In addition, in certain highly homogeneous product market, supply chain management may be the single most important factor to determine the success or failure. For example, in laptop computers and inkjet printers market, many manufacturers are taking the same OEM route or adopt the same suppliers of raw materials and the same technology, and in this case, the enterprises competition is the competition of brand marketing, cost and service, while cost and service levels are two key elements in a supply chain management. In short, supply chain management issues relates to many aspects of activities, from strategic level to the tactical level to operating level (Tsiakis, 2008). Strategic level relates decision-making which have long-term impact on the company, including the number of manufacturing plants and warehouses, layout and size of production capacity and material flow in the logistics network and decision-making of other aspects. Tactical decision-making generally include the procurement and production decisions, inventory policies and transportation strategies. The operating level contains the decision-making of daily activities, such as plans, estimates of stocking, arranging transportation routes, shipping and so on. There are some important issues in the management, such as: Reconfiguration of distribution network: this may be due to lease contract termination of the few existing warehouse or number change of the channel changes. Distribution strategy: in the supply chain management, distribution strategy is critical. Which strategy should be adopted? Direct transport strategy, distribution strategy classic or direct transport strategy? How many transfer points? Which strategy is more suitable for the majority of the enterprise in the supply chain? Supply chain integration and strategic partners: owning to the dynamics of the supply chain itself as well as conflicting objectives exist in enterprises with different nodes, supply chain integration is very difficult. Such questions as what information should be shared, how to share the information become the most critical issues. 4. Inventory control: Whether the terminal channel order quantity should be greater than, less than or equal to the demand forecast? In order to minimize inventory and storage costs, how many products should be set? 5. Product Design: When the product should be designed to reduce logistics costs or shorten the cycle of the supply chain; whether product design can compensate for the uncertainty of customer demand; in order to take advantage of new product design, what kind of changes should be done to supply chain? 6. Information technology and decision support systems: How to analyze and use data? What is the impact of Internet? What is the role of e-commerce? Whether information technology and decision support system can be the main tool of competitive advantage? 7. Customer value measurement: customer value is a measure of a companys contribution to its target customers. In different industries, what factors determine the customer value? How to measure customer value? In the supply chain, how information technology can be used to enhance the customer value? How supply chain management impact on customer value? Question 2 Map out Dell Supply Chain Suppliers Dell Manufacturing Customers The supply chain of Dell only includes customers, Dell and its suppliers. Supply chain map is shown above. This supply chain rules out the presence of middlemen (wholesalers, distributors and retailers) and it takes customer order directly from the hands of customers, and the omission of the link significantly reduces the cost of a variety of distribution channels (excluding the profits partition of middlemen), and the cost of products significantly decrease, which lays the foundation for Dells low-price competition (Dell returns such cost savings to the customer, so its products more competitive) Provide evidence of conflicting objectives in the supply chain The conflicting objectives in the supply chain in Dell are the manufacturing cost and its quality, cost and the speed reach customer. As the case study material says, Dellà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢s manufacturing costs has continued surge. One of its divisionà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢s directors, Tom Wilson, says that the increase recently in Level 5 manufacturing is marked in Dell. From the perspective of Dell, this cost will increase the cost to the overall manufacturing process. That way, Dell cannot be able to use advantages as Dell should for the lower cost structure of its contract manufactures. Instead, Dell has to rely more heavily on the 3rd-party integrators. That way, not only Dell get products with lower quality because they do not perform integration unit testing by using 3rd-party integrators, and the Dell also has some difficulties to foresee for the 3rd-party integrators about how much manufacturing capacity they should have to support the demand of De ll. There is also contradicting in the cost and the time. In Dell, customers can select the components when making an order, hence if Dell manufactures a fully completed product and transports it by shipping form the contract manufacturer in China to the customers living in the United States would be time-consuming, and if they manufacture a completed product and transport it by air, then it is cost-consuming. Therefore, for Dell, the contract manufacturers in China manufacture and transport half-assembled products by ship to its factories and once the order reaches and the components selected by the customer is ready, the factory assemble the components and manufacture a completed computer and deliver to consumers timely. What are the risks that rare or unexpected events pose in this supply chain? Although the supply chain of Dell only contains suppliers, Dell and customers, there are still some risks that exist in this supply chain and make the inability of Dell. For example, many issues will cause Dell cannot provides motherboards timely to contract manufacturers for L5 manufacturing. Chipset suppliers de-commit or supply issues. When chipset suppliers cannot provide qualified chipsets, it will disrupt the supply chain. And the data reveals that this reason takes up more than 60% in the manufacturing of L5. According to the data form Dellà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢s Worldwide Procurement organization, it accounts for 63.5% of expedites expenses. Quality/engineering issues. These issues will cause the motherboards with dysfunction and problems which need to be modified or substituted by a new supply. This will lead to an additional unexpected need for motherboards, and these parts of motherboards are not the part of the forecast. This reason accounts for 24.5% of expedites expense, following that of the chipset suppliersà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢ issues. Dell forecast accuracy. When the real need of customers is more than that of the forecast, Dell has to purchase extra chipsets, and if it does not to do so, it will take risk that it cannot meet the needs of customers. Generally, the time for manufacturing, assembling, testing and delivering a chipset is 13 weeks on average, and this time is long which makes it difficult for the chipset supplier to provide the additional chipsets to satisfy the need plan of Dell. This accounts for 8.3% of the expedite expenses. New product introduction. Since the need for newly developed PC products is changing fast and the development of the market is volatile, it is difficult to forecast, which may make an extra needs to air-transport more motherboards which are not required when the product is mature. At that time, the level of L6 manufacturing will not change and the need level keeps consistent. This changing demand can make the L5 manufacturing increase. That is, the motherboard-chassis assembly in the United States will increase to diminish the time to sale for a new developed product. This account for 3.8% of the expedite expenses.

Eli Wiesels Night and Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities :: Synthesis Essays

Eli Wiesel's â€Å"Night† and Charles Dickens' â€Å"A Tale of Two Cities† Life is not always fair. There is no real explanation for this. In almost all constitutions people are created equal but very rarely are all of them treated this way. But before the French revolution happened very few people even had these rights. Then when WW II came around the Jewish people were targeted by the Nazis. They were stripped of all their rights and basically became slaves to the Nazis party. The Nazis tried to rid Europe of the Jewish people and if they had their way eventually the whole world would be free of this religious group. The character that people show through times of adversity can define them individually and as an entire group. In â€Å"Night† Eli Wiesel faces life and death everyday in the Nazis concentration camp. While in â€Å"A tale of two cities† by Charles Dickens, Carton saves Darnay’s life twice once during a trial and another at the guillotine even though Carton resents Darnay shows mans true potential. â€Å"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times† (Dickens), this famous quote can be applied to more than just the opening of A Tale of Two Cities. In this very moment there are great things going on all over the world. Things like scientific discovers and diplomatic resolutions to international problems are being done right now. There are however many problems happening too. Civil wars and ethnic cleansings occurring in Africa the tsunami that devastated many Asian islands were people are struggling to survive. Yet with all of these things man does not give up we fight on through and that could be mans greatest asset. To fight on even though there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel. The most horrific of tragedies ever to happen to man was due to mans evil. The holocaust was a tragedy where over 11 million innocent people were killed for no other reason than there religious beliefs. The most amazing thing though is not the cruelty of man but instead the strength of the human race to fight through even though so many have lost their lives for no reason. Not to say that they never had doubts of whether they were going to make it through. Even the people who before this never had a waiver in their faith had trouble staying strong in belief that God will save them.

Religion Essay -- Morality

While the degree of religious fervor has flourished and waned in various civilizations, religion itself has never ceased to be a point of interest. At times, it has enjoyed effusive praise while at other times it has met cold reception. Religion as explored in Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and The Stranger by Albert Camus is openly criticized. Under the harsh, bald statements of realism, religion loses its ethereal wonder and under the hostile stare of absurdism, religion renounces its meaning. Flaubert’s protagonist, Emma, and his other characters more often than not possess only a superficial understanding of faith, essentially precluding any of religion’s positive impact. Meanwhile, Camus derides religion as a futile endeavor in an indifferent world and casts an unfriendly light on the religious magistrate, who is juxtaposed with the protagonist, Meursault. Thus, Camus depicts the futile proselytizing of an absurdist man, who disregards religion, while Flaubert illustrates the failure of religion to save a woman consumed by romanticism. In both cases, religion is criticized for falling short of delivering its purported salvation. Morality, the pride of religious followers, is much heralded as a virtue, yet Camus and Flaubert depict a different reality where religion fails to prevent immorality, much less promote morality. Camus calls into question the definition of â€Å"morality†: on what basis are other people deemed to be moral or immoral? on whose consensus is that morality then heralded? From the prosecutor’s point of view, the fact that Meursault â€Å"hadn’t wanted to see Maman, that [he] hadn’t cried once† during her funeral is sufficient evidence to condemn him (Camus 89). As the title of the book The Stranger suggests... ...bert unflinchingly peels back the social niceties to display religion as it has evolved into an inadequate, superficial interest for his characters. As represented in both books, religion is more a distraction than a panacea for life’s hurdles. It fails to moderate the passion of Emma, who clings to religion with the same pitiful desperation as she did with her affairs. Meursault refuses to conform to any sort of religious nexus and in the process, ironically opening himself up to the hostility of the world and die joyfully. While the defiance of Meursault against religion results in his absurdist happiness, the turmoil of Emma’s life, caused by her romantic urges, her encumbered social position, and the repeated failures of religion, end in death by rat poison. Two deaths thus signify very different lives, but religion as found in both texts is condemned.

Dont Say A Word :: essays research papers

Don’t Say A Word was what Nathan Conrad heard from his daughters’ kidnappers. This movie was intense and heart stopping. It all started out in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in November of 1991. Five men commit a bank robbery to steal one prize jewel. After the robbery, the five men split into two groups and took two different get-away vehicles. One vehicle had three men and the other had two men. The vehicle with two men contained â€Å"Jon Doe† (name never mentioned) and another anonymous man. These two men planned on stealing the jewel from their partners throughout the entire crime; they were successful in doing so. It showed the two men laughing and having a drink as they split open Jon Doe’s daughter; Elizabeth Burrows, doll to conceal the jewel inside of the doll, named Nilempha. Ten years later the movie continues on with a well-known psychiatrist named Nathan Conrad on the day before Thanksgiving. One of Nathan’s previous co-workers paged him and said it was an emergency to come directly to the Bridgeview Psychiatric Hospital to see a patient named Elizabeth Burrows who has just sliced a man with a razor numerous times. Elizabeth had been institutionalized for the past ten years in twenty different institutes; this showed she was extremely disturbed. When Nathan arrived at the Hospital, he met Elizabeth and found she had not eaten, had anything to drink, or spoken since her arrival. He also noticed she had numerous bruises and scars in areas known for suicide attempts. When she was a young girl she watched her father, Jon Doe, from the previous robbery brutally murdered in a subway. The other men, who helped him commit the crime found him, beat him and threw him in front of a subway train. The men who did this were arrested and tried, but were now out of prison and looking for her. This is why she stayed in the hospitals because she felt safe. He tried to speak to her and with no replies he began to walk out when she said, â€Å"You want what they want†, he turned and asked her what she meant. She repeated herself and then sang, â€Å"I’ll never tell†. With this Nathan grew curious as to who â€Å"they† were. He stayed at the hospital until close to ten o’clock PM before returning home to his wife and eight-year-old daughter, Jessie.

Harlequin Five Forces Analysis Essay

High economies of scale required. For an entrant to gain success in romance novel market, it must possess mature sales, production, and distribution to operate effectively, which also leads to great risk. High product differentiation required. Other companies start to add more features while Harlequin products remain relatively unchanged. Significant capital requirement required. This is evident in Simon and Schuster’s case, in which it bears a high upfront investment for this battle. Access to distribution channels is medium to difficult. Harlequin has gained exclusive access to groceries, but failed on stand-alone retails. Other competitors either choose regular bookstore or similar as Harleuqins’; however, it might be difficult to entrants to gain access to these channels by themselves. Government policy has been very protective to authors; however, no clear restrictions on product images. Buyers Power Increasing buying power due to additional competing products Low switching cost Changing target markets A variety of choices Poor retention rate, high return rate Loss of existing customers and high cost of attracting a new customer American Romance Series to meet consumer’s tastes Substitutes Threat of Substitutes is high due to technology advancement and demand diversification. Evident in Harlequin’s attempts of film, magazine and scholar’s choice (bookstore). Suppliers Power Increasing supplier power due to promising offer from Simon and Schuster Loss of excellent authors who later generate sales for Simon and Schuster shows that authors possess significant supplier power Other supplier powers such as sales force, printing business are relative stable Industry Competitors, Rivalry among existing firms Low growth rate as more competitors are competing for a stable market other competitors are earning market share at Harlequin’s expenses oligopolistic market is another factor of intense competition â€Å"Romance War† due to introduction of silhouette Simon and Schuster introduced Silhouette, a rival line of romance novels, in 1980 32% market share and rising Competes the oversea markets Emerging competitors as a result of Silhouette’s introduction; also evident in 5 additional rival lines launched in 1982 accelerate the intensity of competition and decrease Harlequin’s market share and volume sales Possession of competitive advantage (i.e. No best seller management and standardization) which ease competition temporarily Bitter rivalry with Sillhouette – S&S although losing money, but gaining market share underestimated by Harlequin hired Harlequin’s former vice president and best-selling authors advertising budget copied Harlequin’s Presents – confused buyers Financial Revenue increase slowly Profit dropped to half 1980-1981 ($44.7 –> 22.3) drastically decreased from 1982 -1983 ($25.8 –> 5.5) remove unprofitable subsidiaries – films, scholar’s choices, magazine etc Debt high debt ratio – rapid increase from 1980-1982, then lower in 1983 expensive bad debts from the Reader Service Cost 40 new stores eating up all the cash increasing costs of Reader Services reducing costs at corporate level – cut overhead expenses by 20% sales decreased, advertising expenses increased Working Capitals decreasing working capitals – lack of cash flow for investment – only 33 millions in 1983

Persuasive Essay Essay

When you rummage through your refrigerator what do you seek? A bag of chips, a fruity flavored yogurt, some buttery popcorn? Whatever it is, it all fills you up. Whether it is with a junky treat or something partially healthy. Whatever you choose, it impacts you. It affects the way you sleep, the energy you have, and your blood sugar. So the little discussion of picking a chocolate bar and an apple impacts you greatly in the long run. This is why you should start making healthier choices now when you are still growing. I must admit it is easier for me to choose eating junk food. It may seem yummy and delicious, but its not. Almost every single piece of junk food is either full with fat or artificial flavorings. Did you know that the McDonalds fries contain 610 calories and 29 grams of fat? If you ate a Burger King, meal that contains 1,800 calories, it would take you nearly 6 hours of intense bicycle riding to burn away the calories. The average American kid eats at McDonalds at least one time each month. Teenagers drink around the average of 760 cans of soda per year. And not only does junk food just add fat and other unwanted substances to your body, it also harms you. Obesity is the second cause of death in America. The consumption of sodas has increased the risk of diabetes. Junk food is the major cause of most heart diseases or failures. Junk food causes high cholesterol, which causes long-term damage to your liver. Wow, pretty scary right? Ways to decrease junk food consumption would be the next time when you are rummaging through your refrigerator stop and choose the vegetable section. Pick a banana, or apple. Or leave junk food off-limits until special days or weekends. There are multiple ways, but the biggest way is the next time something sugary is about to go into your mouth, stop and think about all the negative sides. Because not only does junk food affect your weight, it affects your future.

Enlightenment and Romanticism

Constructions of reading/writing in the British literature of the Enlightenment and Romanticism Robinson Crusoe, which was written by Daniel Defoe, was published in 1719. At the time of its publish, a revolution was taking place all across Europe known as the Enlightenment period. The Enlightenment period was a time of conflict, suffering, and also a time of growth for society. This revolutionary time period gave birth to such terms as deism, rationalism, skepticism, and empiricism. The period also saw an uprising in a new ideology towards human thought.Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe is primarily defined by a mythic conversion experience as the novel's core narrative structure traces the hero's transition from social isolation and disconnection to self-actualisation and social reintegration. As sole survivor of a shipwreck, Crusoe has to survive in, and adapt to a space which he initially experiences as alien and threatening, and he gradually begins to transform himself along with hi s environment. By the time he leaves the island 28 years later, he has become a resourceful and capable ruler over an economically viable cultural monopoly. This conversion process is exemplified by Crusoe's appropriation of the island, as this space becomes the site onto which all of his anxieties and aspirations are inscribed. Consequently, the island is â€Å"transformed† from untamed wilderness into a cultivated â€Å"paradise† that bears testament to both Enlightenment rectitude and Western accomplishment. As such, the central aim of this article is to examine how Crusoe's conversion of an unknown, marginal and ambiguous geographical locale into a prototypical British colony establishes a monologic world order on the island that defines identity as fixed and the island space as contained. In the Bakhtinian sense, a monologic world is closed, static, and limiting in the way in which it denies the Other. In Robinson Crusoe, a monologic world view is manifested by Crus oe's experience of and adaptation to space as well as processes of identity formation. In this regard, Crusoe's relation to space emulates processes of colonisation, as illustrated by his appropriation and domestication of the island. Furthermore, Crusoe's relation to space also reveals his identity to adhere to an unyielding and codified structure of hierarchy and authority. Crusoe ecreates this monologic structure on the island by appointing himself as master over the island's animal and human residents. Accordingly, literature of the time placed great emphasis on the importance of rationalism and moral righteousness and dealt with themes that showed the importance of conforming to socially acceptable ideals for the sake of achieving self-actualisation. In Robinson Crusoe, Enlightenment ideals are articulated by the novel's compounding theme of individual advancement from a primitive state to a productive, ordered and purposeful existence.Though life seems to have been experienced as a vale of tears since the beginning of recorded history, the manner of feeling has changed considerably from one culture epoch to another. Every reader knows that â€Å"sentimentalism†,used almost invariably today to condemn the excessive, maudlin,or false emotional response, refers also to a benevolistic ideal which from at least 1740s made tears rather than leers a mark of society. From Goldsmith`s writings, a reader can see that the focus centers on the simple agrarian life style of the yeoman farmer. This focus would be natural, since Goldsmith was born and raised in the rural culture of Ireland. Goldsmith and other pre-romantics had a cautious distrust for industrialism, while the Romantics had developed later a strong aversion toward the destruction of rural communities throughout England, Ireland, and Scotland. The Vicar of Wakefield discusses the loss of nobility, faith, and innocence. Oddly, The Vicar of Wakefield did not achieve any greatness until the 19th century .In his advertisement about the book, Goldsmith states, â€Å"The hero of this piece unites in himself the three greatest characters upon earth; he is a priest, an husbandman, and the father of a family. † The protagonist is the sort of man that we can all admire. Through the character of Dr. Primrose, the reader will watch a man of honor try to combat the decay of his society around him by attempting to stay true to his own principles, even when he seems to fail to impress these principles upon his own family, particularly his wife and daughters.Like a conlusion, the first novel shows us the truth, the right situation when the man should be satisfied within his limitations, the work for him is a noble thing and he is driving by ideas,by the other hand in the second novel ,the literary form is more orginal, every day experience and by the way in prim-plan sets the feelings . The feelings provide knowledge and here is no limits, no adventure, no leisure: ‘painful feeling of incomplete destiny†. For the society in romanticism is important alienation and for enlightenment ,the order and the authority ineherently good.

A day of sorrow is longer than a month of joy Essay

This Chinese proverb renders (redÄÆ') in a synthetic way the fact that we perceive the time in a subjective way, according to the moods created by the reaction to the events that we go through. When we pass through unpleasant event of life, we feel weak, vulnerable, even hopeless and everything seems to go wrong in our life; so, time seems longer than it actually is. On the other hand, when we live happy moments , everything seems to go perfectly , we get enough power to improve our life, our family ties , our relationships with other people and we are more satisfied with ourselves. But, why do we feel that a day of sorrow is longer than a month of joy ? It is said that unhappiness is a completely rational response to certain losses so when we lose our self- confidence, or our health, our family ties, our friends or even when we do things which are unpleasant for us, we end up by feeling bad and time seems to freeze. But, when we feel fulfilled or when we do things that we like, we feel good and time seems to fly. The problem is that most of us tend to stay with what we know rather than choose any form of change. As a result, we continue to be unhappy. If we decide to change things, however, then we begin a journey that only we can map out. We should allow ourselves to face up the fact that it is possible to actually get rid of doubts and learn to be more contended with our life. This will bring a change of many aspects in our life including our outlook, our relationships and our choices.

Almond Tree By Stallworthy

Almond Tree By Stallworthy Essay Poetry is often written as a result of reflecting on an intense emotional experience or a significant event. Examine the techniques used by one poet to convey the significance of an experience or an event, which gave rise to a poem, or sequence of poems. The Almond Tree by Jon Stallworthy describes through the eyes of an expectant fathers supreme emotional joy at the prospect of the birth of this child. The excitement and joy turn to despair and hopelessness when he is told that his son is a Mongol. The poem begins on an optimistic tone and the poet conveys this prospect by giving life to objects, which are normally dull and go, unnoticed; Trees of black iron and lights as green as peppermints. The poet uses a fairytale image to create a lack of realism in order to re-enforce the optimistic tone As if I were the lucky prince in an enchanted wood However the poet uses this technique further on in the poem to convey his devastation when realising the he will not be able to communicate with his son because of his disability; Never to come ashore into my kingdom speaking my language In my opinion this creates a good contrast to that of his image at the beginning of the poem. Jon Stallworthy uses a clever use of personification as another technique in order to portray his hopes The tower held up its hand the college bells shook their heads in blessing This once again stresses his anticipation and excitement at the prospect of becoming a father. The poet also uses personification as he describes the symbolic almond tree waving him. For the tree was waving me waving me upstairs As before this is in direct contrast to further on in the poem when the almond tree is once again wavin g at him; And the almond waving me down This contrast I believe conveys the significance between the two emotions that the poet is facing. When the almond tree is waving the pet up stairs his emotions lack reality. However when the Almond tree is waving him down it is a direct balance to before and he is brought back down to reality. In order to create tension as the poets excitement increases at the birth of his son the poet uses imagery and that becomes physiological as the poet recreates the process of birth by using words like; spinal, bone white and blood tide. The poet attempts to capture the rhythm of labour with Walls shuddering shuddering womb wave after wave wave after wave beat on the bone coast. This also introduces the image of the sea, which is continued throughout the poem Lashed down ship shape my son sailed from me Are both in contrast to the previous mention of ships as once again this technique portrays the poets two very different emotions. One of the more used techniques that Jon Stallworthy uses in this poem is a metaphor and he uses this technique along with imagery to convey his happiness when his son is born as he compares his new found happiness to wealth; My bright farthing coined by our love ow you enrich us He describes his son as his best poem and welcomes him to his white sheet. In my opinion this represents a new beginning however this does not last for long as he is then told that his son is a Mongol. The manner in which he is told that his son is a Mongol is straight to the point and very clinical. He uses words such as scissored and slicing which both indicate his primary bonding with his son have been cut. READ: Antigone Ismene And Haimon EssayYour son is a Mongol Is detached blunt and straight to the point and can be seen as monosyllabic. As clean as a bullet Describes how this information destroys his life. This was my first death Explains that he will experience this death more times in suffering. In order to relate the poets lack of acceptance Jon Stallworthy describes the man as having an outer body experience. The following words end in assonance, which gives the poem a slower pace. As the symbolic Almond tree brings him back to reality it begins to bud which I believe symbolises birth and life the tone becomes a more hopeful one as; Bud after bud split Is the poets rebirth and understanding growing. He sees it as beautiful labour like a mother giving birth and the trees full blossom like a ship in full sail. From this technique I think that the poet can now see himself blossom in the sense of understanding. Fathered by m son Only when he recognises this can he turn to acknowledge the son he was about to reject.

Assignment One - Essay Example As the utilization of ICT increases with the creation of new applications, the governments continue to adopt these services. The implementation of the ICT technologies by governments matches the millennium development goals (MDG’s) that focus on digitizing government services. Although embracing some of the ICT technologies strains the financial budgets of countries, all governmental stakeholders agree that it is immensely critical in facilitating public services. Evidently, there has been an evolution of modern communication methods. The methods through which citizens interact with the government have changed remarkably from counter transactions to digital channels, for example, government websites. Rwanda is one of the countries that are currently incorporating ICT technologies in their governance structures (Watkins, 2008). This entails public sector services such as healthcare, license acquisition, taxation and education. Due to this, the government will be able to provide better services. The adoption of ICT solutions by various countries is in coherence with the globalization objective of computerizing administration procedures. The digitization processes are within the millennium development goals (MDG’s) of developing counties. ICT enhancement addresses Rwanda’s MDGs. The Rwandan government acknowledges the rising utilization of ICT in daily lives of its citizens. Consequently, the enhancement of government services through the ICT will be highly beneficial. It will assist the governance process in achieving exemplary echelons of performance. Furthermore, ICT adoption will increase the interaction of the authorities and citizens, further enhancing responsiveness of Rwanda’s government to their citizens’ concerns. For example, the Rwandan health ministry can create websites that focus on the needs of the citizens (Watkins, 2008). This means the citizens can apply health services online and share information. Additionally, the

Federal Wolves at the Door - Essay Example The federal Endangered Species Act however protects a threatened or endangered species throughout its breeding range. The second reason for the preference of national legislation is that state’s regulations may be inadequate to protect the endangered species. For instance, the regulatory mechanisms in Idaho, home of the northern Rockies gray wolves, are considered inadequate for two key reasons (Alderman 1232). One, the wolf management plans of the state are non-binding in nature and thus difficult to enforce because state residents are not bound to comply with them. Two, unregulated killing of wolves is allowed under the Idaho defence of property laws if it is for the protection of domestic animals. Further, an upper limit has not been set for the number of wolves that can be killed in defence of domestic animals (Alderman 1222). Although opinion is divided on whether the states should be allowed to regulate and administer endangered species that inhabit their jurisdictions, the Endangered Species Act remains the reference point for the protection of endangered species. Why do student cheat and what should the consequences be Research Paper

Why do student cheat and what should the consequences be - Research Paper Example Many students plagiarize and are caught. The truth is that in order to provide depth of research, a writer will need to combine primary and secondary sources. In the sciences, for example, raw data is important, but how that data has been interpreted by others, over the years, is also very significant. You need to cite that work and not merely present it as your own. It is important to use academic libraries, online databases such as ProQuest, and Google Books and Scholar, in order to find these sources and put them into action. Beware collecting or holding on to irrelevant information, which is sometimes a temptation. It is easy to get sidetracked and create a â€Å"bulge†Ã¢â‚¬â€a part or paragraph of the essay that has no real connection with the thesis. It is also easy to forget where your work starts and where someone else s begins. That is how a lot of plagiarism begins. You copy a lot of quotes into your paper hoping to use them and cite them properly, but over the week s you begin to forget what work is yours and what work is not. There are many examples of this happening to students (Richardson). An article by Sue McGowan and Margaret Lightbody provides a lot of useful information about plagiarism and its consequences. The authors of this paper are deeply concerned about it. They suggest that instead of threatening to punish students who plagiarize work, a more effective approach is to educate them about the affects and consequences of plagiarism. The authors describe an experiment to help educate accounting students. The study asked students a number of important questions relating to plagiarism. For example, when is it necessary to cite references. What does it mean to paraphrase? What are the potential punishments or disciplinary actions for performing an act of plagiarism? The authors concluded that providing students with an incentive to put references in their work is a good way to avoid acts of plagiarism. They

Cross -Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Cross -Culture - Essay Example Managers therefore have to understand the cultural differences in order to operate effectively in the tough business environment. Managers are required to motivate their employees and they can only do that if they know the differences between cultures of employees. Awareness of cultural differences is a must in order to manage employees from different background. For example Japanese and Indian working together will have different needs like in Japan lunch is the main meal of the day while in India dinner is the main meal. Now a manager has to decide upon the lunch timings so that both the needs of Japanese and Indian employees can be satisfied. This is why cross cultural training is important both for employees and for managers. Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory gives six dimensions of values across which people differ with each other. One of those dimensions is the Power Distance Index or PDI. Power distance is the extent to which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions (like the family) accept and expect that power is distributed unequally. PDI represents inequality in an organization or in a country. Culture that has low PDI is more democratic and people are considered equal. Culture that has high PDI is autocratic and people accept inequality. Brazil has a 69 on PDI which is very high. The world average on PDI is 55 which mean that Brazil has higher PDI as compared to the average. This means that Brazil is a relatively autocratic society with greater inequalities. Brazil’s PDI is very similar to Latin American countries. In Brazil people accept that organizational hierarchies exist and also accept lower pays relative to supervisors. A tradition of giving in to the authority exists in the country. Another dimension of Hofstede’s theory is individuality versus collectivism. It is the degree to which individuals are integrated into groups. In

Organisational management - Essay Example he rules promulgated by the government for the benefit of the citizens in a way that would attempt to resolve conflict among individuals and groups as well as stamping out crime. The police organisations are structured in such a way where there are different departments responsible for different operations but at the end of the day are aimed at achieving the main objective of their existence which is promoting peace and an open system in their operations has been lauded as effective especially when interacting with the external environment. However, there are various factors that may influence the operations of the managers in police organisations such as PESTEL. The open system also affects the operations of an organisation to a certain extent as going to be discussed. As a point of departure, it is imperative to highlight the notion of open system as a way of gaining a clear understanding of the whole concept. Basically, the concept of open systems posits to the effect that police organisations rely heavily on the external environment which is significant in evaluating the inputs and the outputs related to their services (Chronkhite C.L., 2007). For instance, it was observed that in the UK most factors which impacted on the criminal justice system were external and finding responsive service to these problems required constant monitoring and feedback from the outside environment. This could be achieved through an open system that would allow the police service to get feedback from the external environment related to inputs and outputs and then carefully analyse this in order to operate more effectively and independently especially from political intervention. The control feedback is structured in such a way that is cybernetic in nature where the external agencies play the informing role and the police would act on such information in executing their duties. Like any other organisation, the police do not operate in a vacuum but in a society made up of people who

Knowing Your Audience Paper and Communiation Release Essay

Knowing Your Audience Paper and Communiation Release - Essay Example Immediately rescue efforts began, but two days later, another shaft collapsed halting the rescue operation of the crews for many hours. Indeed, in such a situation, the company would need to be more cautious in how the world is notified of the incidence (Lusted, 2012). Basically, there are two ways in which the company would be expected to communicate information. The first being directed to the families of the workers trapped, the second to the other employees and finally, to the press. Those chosen to relay the information would be expected to be more careful so as to keep the goodwill of the company unaffected while ensuring that all the information is truthfully and accurately conveyed (Lundgren and McMakin, 2011). This may be achieved by knowing the potential needs of the families of the miners and that of the company’s employees. In this respect, the family members need consolation and the assurance that the company did its best to help save lives and prevent further losses. The employees need the assurance that the company is concerned about their safety and welfare. The potential needs of the families of trapped miners in receiving a message concerning this incident would include among other things a detailed information of any potential dangers to the trapped miners, clear steps the company is taking with actual details and times, in order to convince the families that no opportunity or expense is being spared by the company to rescue their loved ones. It is also critical at the onset of the disaster to provide information relating to the identities and number of miners trapped (Lundgren and McMakin, 2011). The potential needs of employees of the company in receiving the message about this incidence would include knowledge of the identity, the number of colleagues trapped, and the efforts being made by the company in an attempt to save their tapped colleagues.
